Connecting Tradovate to Your Prop Firm Account and TradingView

Getting a Tradovate-based funded account actually trading-ready involves a few distinct steps most onboarding docs skim past. Here's what the connection between your prop firm, Tradovate, and TradingView (if you use it) actually looks like.

Once a prop firm has actually funded your account and provisioned Tradovate access, there’s a real setup sequence before you’re trading-ready — and it’s worth doing properly rather than piecing it together mid-session on your first live day.

The account relationship, concretely

Your prop firm and Tradovate are connected, but they’re not the same login, and they don’t update on the same schedule. Concretely:

  • The prop firm’s dashboard is where you track evaluation progress (if still in the challenge phase), payout requests, account status, and rule compliance.
  • Tradovate itself is where you actually place and manage trades — this is the execution layer.

Don’t expect these two to always show perfectly synced numbers in real time; see the FAQ above for why a lag isn’t necessarily a problem.

Connecting TradingView, if you want it

Tradovate has its own built-in charting and order entry, and plenty of funded traders never touch TradingView at all. But if you specifically want TradingView’s charting on top of a Tradovate-funded account, the connection is a real, distinct step:

  1. Your account needs to actually be Tradovate-funded and active first — this isn’t something you configure before the account exists.
  2. TradingView has its own broker-connection flow for Tradovate specifically (not a generic “connect any broker” flow) — look for Tradovate explicitly in TradingView’s supported-broker list when connecting.
  3. Order execution still routes through Tradovate underneath — TradingView becomes the charting/order-entry front-end, not a replacement for the Tradovate account itself.

Where onboarding docs commonly fall short

A few things that trip people up, based on how often they show up as real questions:

  • Assuming API access is automatic. Direct API access to a Tradovate-funded account (for anyone running their own tools or automated strategies) is a separate provisioning step, not something that exists by default just because the account is funded — check with the specific firm on whether and how this is supported.
  • Not confirming which Tradovate environment you’re actually connected to. Especially during evaluation, firms sometimes use a distinct environment from what a fully funded account later uses — a detail worth confirming directly with the firm rather than assuming.
  • Skipping a test trade before relying on the setup live. A small, deliberate test trade during a quiet market window catches connection issues before they cost you during an actual setup you’re trying to trade.

Getting help when something doesn’t connect

Connection specifics — exact environment names, API provisioning, TradingView-Tradovate linking quirks — are genuinely firm-specific enough that generic troubleshooting only gets you partway. The firm’s own support channel, used directly, is worth it rather than guessing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need TradingView at all if I'm using Tradovate?

No — Tradovate has its own built-in charting and order entry. TradingView is optional, used by traders who prefer its charting tools or already have TradingView workflows they want to keep using with a Tradovate-funded account.

Why does my prop firm dashboard show a different balance than Tradovate?

This is usually a timing/sync issue rather than an error — Tradovate reflects your live trading account in real time, while a firm's own dashboard may update on a delay (often once per trading day, or after specific triggers like a payout). Check the specific firm's documentation for how often their dashboard syncs before assuming something's wrong.
